Exploitation

  • The illegal taking, misuse, or concealment of funds, property, and/or assets from someone for someone else’s benefit
  • Having expectations beyond capabilities, e.g. beyond the developmental stage of a child, or beyond the abilities of an elder
  • Forcing someone to participate in unwanted activities without just cause
  • Using blame, shame, judgment or guilt to condemn someone for behavior of others (parents/peers/siblings)
  • The action or fact of treating someone unfairly in order to benefit
  • Unreasonable expectations for someone to perform particular duties
  • The act of employing the greatest possible advantage

Exploitation Includes:

  • Requiring a child to care for a parent or siblings without regard for the child’s age or ability
  • Expecting the elderly to do things they are no longer capable of
  • Expecting the mentally handicapped to do more than they are capable of
  • Exposing someone to sexually abusive or age-inappropriate content
  • Taking, misusing, or concealing someone’s funds, property, and/or assets for someone else’s benefit

Exploitation can be considered manipulation or forced activity without regard for a person’s need for development. For instance, repeatedly asking an eight-year-old to be responsible for taking care of the baby or sick Grandma is inappropriate. Giving a child responsibilities that are more than a child of that age can handle or using a child for profit is abusive.
